Posted: January 20, 2021

Please join us on Friday, January 29 CST from 10:30am-12:00pm EST / 9:30-11:30pm CST for a webinar that will provide a brief overview of information and updates on work under the Nutrients Annex of the Great Lakes Water Quality Agreement (GLWQA). This webinar will present ongoing efforts to manage excess phosphorus loads leading to toxic and nuisance algal blooms and hypoxia in Lake Erie.

The webinar will be led by representatives from the United States Environmental Protection Agency and Environment and Climate Change Canada, and will include presentations by experts from the Nutrients Annex Subcommittee and other stakeholder organizations:

  • The status of phosphorus loads to the western and central basin of Lake Erie (2008-2019), and what we learned from the 2020 harmful algal bloom (Santina Wortman, United States Environmental Protection Agency)
  • Update on nuisance algae monitoring and research in the eastern basin (Mary Anne Evans, United States Geological Survey)
  • Citizen-led monitoring of nuisance Cladophora on the northeastern shore (Jody McKenna, Environment and Climate Change Canada)
  • Updates on new agricultural initiatives in the U.S. and Canada
