The 2006 State of the Lakes Ecosystem Conference (SOLEC)
was held November 1–3, 2006, in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.
The focus of the recent conference was chemical integrity. Day 1
of SOLEC focused on the state of the Great Lakes based on
indicator assessments. Day 2 focused on the state of chemical
integrity in the Great Lakes basin as well as the indicators needed
to assess chemical integrity. Afternoon breakout sessions followed both Day 1 and Day 2 plenary sessions.
These afternoon sessions were an opportunity for participants to
discuss the information that is presented in the morning plenary
sessions as well as debate more specific issues. Workshops related
to cross-cutting issues were held on Day 3 of SOLEC and covered a variety of interesting topics including: E. coli and beach
postings, sustainability, groundwater issues, green chemistry and
industry action to reduce toxic substances, wildlife friendly wind
power in the Great Lakes basin, plus many other interesting
sessions. See
